What is the AWS Workload Migration Assessment?
The AWS Workload Migration Assessment is a structured, data-driven service that helps you plan and optimize your move to Amazon Web Services. Instead of a simple lift-and-shift, it focuses on right-sizing AWS instances and services so your cloud environment matches real workload needs.
Using detailed analysis of your current infrastructure, the assessment helps you:
- Understand your existing compute, storage, and network usage
- Identify workload dependencies that could slow or complicate a migration
- Reduce risk by uncovering potential roadblocks before you move
- Design a migration plan that supports scalability and future innovation
The result is a clearer path to AWS that balances cost, performance, and long-term flexibility.
How does the assessment help control cloud and licensing costs?
The assessment looks beyond infrastructure sizing to help you manage one of the most overlooked cost drivers in the cloud: licensing.
Specifically, it helps you:
- Reduce and reuse legacy licensing: Identify where you can consolidate or repurpose licenses across Microsoft, VMware, and database workloads instead of buying new ones.
- Control hidden licensing costs: Highlight licenses that quietly add up in the background and recommend rightsizing to cut ongoing spend.
- Right-size cloud resources: Match AWS compute, storage, and network services to actual usage patterns, avoiding overprovisioning.
By combining infrastructure optimization with licensing consolidation, the assessment helps improve long-term operational efficiency and makes your AWS spend more predictable and sustainable.
How does this support long-term cloud strategy and scalability?
The assessment is designed to help you reimagine your cloud strategy, not just move workloads as they are.
It supports long-term goals in several ways:
- Strategic migration planning: Aligns your AWS architecture with your business objectives so you can scale efficiently and reduce risk over time.
- Data-driven planning: Improves visibility into your infrastructure and application dependencies, which helps avoid vendor lock-in and supports scalable growth.
- Future-proofing your strategy: Encourages cloud investments that support flexibility, ongoing optimization, and future innovation rather than short-term fixes.
In practice, this means your migration roadmap is built not only for day-one performance, but also for how your organization expects to operate and grow in the coming years.
